The 34th annual Portage Health Great Bear Chase Ski Marathon will be on Saturday, March 8, 2014. This continues the race’s long tradition of being held exactly two weeks after the Birkie.
The Great Bear Chase was started in 1981 as a later-winter race to showcase Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. It’s the final ski marathon in the Midwest, and is held in one of the only places that still has enough snow to handle a race that late in the year. We had more than 20” of base this year!
More than 600 people participated in Great Bear Chase events this year, including the Junior Bear Chase, 14 km, 25 km and 50 km ski races, and the second annual Snow Bike Race. We expect all of those, and possibly more back for the 2014 Great Bear Chase.
