CALUMET – Get out your calendars and mark the date for the 2013 Portage Health Great Bear Chase, which is slated for March 9, 2013.
This race is one of the final races of the cross country skiing season, and takes place on one of the Midwest’s only courses that can truly handle such an event that late in the year.
Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula is considered by many to be the snowiest place in the Midwest. The area averages more than 200 inches a year. Hancock, which is 10 miles to the south of Calumet was named the third snowiest city in the U.S.A. by The Weather Channel in 2011, and it’s not even the snowiest place in the Keweenaw!
